Transdermal therapy is the process of delivering therapy directly to the bloodstream through the skin via a gel, cream, lotion, or patch. Administering medicine in traditional methods are less effective comparing to transdermal therapy due to its interactions with digestive enzymes before they can reach the bloodstream. Transdermal therapy ensures that more active ingredients can reach the bloodstream by bypassing the liver and stomach. Transdermal medicines are being used from the very early stages of the human civilization for different reasons. This extremely versatile form of medicine can be used by almost anyone for benefits like improvements of nervous, hormonal, and immune systems, reduction of nutritional deficiencies, protection from oxidative damage, lowering of chances of cancer, tumor cure, and much more.

Shaving is probably the most popular hair removal process there is. It’s fast, easy, and mostly affordable. But in exchange for the convenience that shaving brings are the ugly after effects and results. Shaving requires the use of a razor blade and/or an electric shaver (if you have one) to do the actual hair removal. In addition, you will also need some good shaving cream to moisturize and lubricate the area before gliding the shaver unto your skin. Sounds efficient? Well, not really.

The process of shaving only removes the hair that is even to the skin. This means that it does not actually remove hair down to its follicle, but rather cuts the hair to make it look like it’s been cleaned. Additionally, hair grows faster after shaving as compared to other hair removal processes such as waxing and plucking because of the follicle. Shaving has also been proven efficient when you do it on areas which you can actually reach and see. Other than that, it would end up uneven and rough on the surface. It’s tedious, expensive, and leaves a stubbly surface. It also creates coarser hair leaving the skin more susceptible to unsightly and sometimes painful ingrown hair.

Another thing that makes shaving a no-no for hair removal is the safety of its use. It involves the use of proper shaving techniques, angles, and great hand control.
When you’re not careful when shaving, you can get cuts and abrasions, and for some, skin irritation. Cuts are common in people who are using new razor blades – the sharper it is, the more careful you have to be. It is also the same case when you use blunt razor blades in shaving. When the blade is not sharp enough to remove hair, the tendency is that you have to repeat the process over and over again until you get satisfying results. It can cause scratches and abrasions and could lead to razor bumps and burns, especially when you don’t use cream and gels or when the area is not well lubricated.

Hair removal has become an essential part of one’s grooming routine with the growing trend of achieving a cleaner and better physical appearance. From beach bums who want to flaunt their sexy bikinis to regular people who just want to look their best. Today, the hair removal process is not just about shaving anymore, with the popularity of safer, more efficient hair removal processes such as sugar waxing, now made available in the market.

So, when it comes to getting unwanted hair removed, I’d suggest you go for the sugar waxing method. Although it requires more time to be done, the quality of the service is not compromised. It’s safer, more efficient, and definitely eco-friendly!

Many people believe that it’s necessary to wash their hair every single day. Others can get away with washing their hair less frequently, especially if they have thick or dry hair. If you ask someone who has fine or oily hair, they would tell you that there is no way they could go more than a day between hair washings. However, did you know that excessive washing can actually be detrimental to your hair?

Giving your hair a break from the unhealthy detergents in a regular shampoo is very important. In addition, the rough way that most people shampoo their hair can actually damage the hair’s cuticle. When you take a break from shampooing for least a day, the natural conditioner that is in your hair gets to the individual strands. This is called sebum. Most shampoos that create a lot of suds are actually doing so only because more chemicals are being placed in the mixture. In fact, a shampoo that has less of a sudsy action is gentler on hair.

Normal shampoo actually removes sebum from the hair, which can also be called the hair’s natural oil. It also removes any dirt, flakes of skin and beauty products from the hair. A lot of people have started to use something called dry shampoo; however, instead of removing sebum from the hair, which is an important component to the health of your scalp and hair, dry shampoo absorbs it. Then, you simply brush it out, leaving your hair cleaner and lighter.

Several companies are making their own dry shampoo products available to the public. For instance, one popular choice is called Lulu Organics Dry Shampoo. This product is completely organic and talc free. It’s made up of the silky powder that allows people to keep the hair from looking oily. It also adds a wonderful smell just from using about a dime sized amount of powder. Simply rub it into the roots of your dry hair, let it sit for a few minutes and brush it out. In fact, it comes in several different scents including lavender, jasmine and sage.

Not only is it better protection for your hair if you don’t wash it every day, but it also keeps you from being exposed to some of the nasty chemicals that come in commercial shampoos. At the very least, you may want to consider using baking soda to soak up extra oils in your hair between washings. This allows you to give your hair the protection it needs to build the individual strands and make them stronger.

Lulu Organics Dry Shampoo is available for purchase at Thread and Sugar salon. Call us for appointments and bookings at 559-761-0669.

The Magic of Shea Butter

Many people swear by the use of Shea butter, but is it really everything it’s made out to be?

First, you have to understand what Shea butter is. It’s known as an ivory colored, or even slightly yellow fat which is extracted out of the nut of the African shea tree. Many cosmetics companies use it in a variety of different products from lotions to moisturizers. Some people even use Shea butter in food as it is edible in its natural form. In fact, sometimes the chocolate industry even uses Shea butter to substitute for cocoa butter, although it does give it quite a different taste.

There are many different ways to make Shea butter; including cracking, separating, roasting, crushing, grinding and separating the oils. Finding a place that makes their own Shea butter is the best case scenario. This is because many of the products in the commercial market claim to have Shea butter in them really don’t have very much natural Shea butter in them at all. When you’re paying for something, you expect it to have the right amount. However, many of these commercial products have more chemicals in them than natural Shea butter.

Shea butter can be used for a variety of different things. There are five different grades when looking at Shea butter. First, you can have raw or unrefined. This is extracted using water. Secondly, there is the refined Shea butter. Third, you may find highly refined Shea butter that has been extracted using chemical solvents. Fourth, there is a grade called the lowest uncontaminated grade. Lastly, there is a version of Shea butter that has contaminants.

The best case scenario is to get raw and unrefined Shea butter, which is what we use at Thread & Sugar salon. It will look a little bit like whipped butter or cream and has a nutty aroma that is removed from the other grades of Shea butter. This ingredient is used in a variety of different beauty products from conditioners to moisturizer cream. Some people also use it in soap. In addition, there are medicinal uses for Shea butter as it is used in ointments and even sunblock.

Some organic beauty products may have unrefined and raw organic Shea butter in them. When possible, choose these options over the regular commercial lotions and products as most of them contain very little Shea butter. If you’re going to invest your money in buying top-quality personal care products, make sure that you get a shea butter product that consists of at least 80% shea butter. A little goes a long way, and should not be applied as liberally as regular over the counter lotions are.

For women who have kinky, coarse, frizzy or extremely curly hair, daily maintenance can be quite achore. Many of these women look longingly at other ladies who have silky, straight hair. In recent times, keratin treatments have become all the rage as women pay good money to have these treatments done to their hair. There is no question that keratin treatments work for most of these women, but they have some pretty high risk factors associated with them.

One of the most popular keratin treatments is called the Brazilian Blow Out. There has been a lot of press regarding this particular treatment because of potential dangers due to the product containing formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, so there is no question as to why people would be concerned putting a toxic chemical on their head. Some women have reported pretty severe health consequences from using these formaldehyde-based treatments, including hair loss and damage.

Most of the straighteners on the market today are keratin-based. What is keratin? It’s a protein which is naturally located in your hair. Its job is to fill in any gaps in hair cuticle that have been damaged by drying or cracking. When mixed with formaldehyde and put on the hair, hairstylists then seal in the chemicals using a flatiron. The reason formaldehyde is used is to assist in keeping those molecules o fkeratin stuck together which ensures straightening of the hair.

Keratin treatments typically stay in the hair for about 2 to 3 months, maximum. The cost of having the treatment depends upon the length of the hair and the amount of time it will take to apply it. Formaldehyde can cause a variety of life-threatening problems. It’s listed as being a human carcinogen which can increase cancers of the throat and nose. Being exposed to high levels of formaldehyde can actually cause shortness of breath, fluid in the lungs, high heart rate and bronchitis. When someone is continually exposed to it, the person could have asthma-like symptoms, rashes and allergic reactions.

Women who want their hands to look their best want to make sure that they are using the safest and highest quality products available. For those individuals who never miss their weekly visit to the nail salon, you’ll want to hear about the amazing benefits of soft gel manicures and pedicures.

Soft gel manicure and pedicure is a procedure that was introduced in nail salons throughout the country in 2010. A manicure done by this method uses a soft gel nail product instead of a regular nail polish. The products look exactly the same, but soft gels lasts longer and does not cause as much damage to the nail as they eliminate the need for drilling or filing.

One of the most beneficial aspects of this type of manicure is how long it lasts. Most women report that the soft gel manicure and pedicure lasts two to three weeks without any noticeable chipping or damage. The reason for this is that the gel is actually cured onto the surface of the nail through the use of an ultra-violet light, making it long lasting and durable.

Another additional benefit to this procedure is the lack of drying time required due to the heat of the ultra-violet light. This eliminates the need to wait around for your nails to dry. Many women are also pleased with the fact that soft gel nail color can be applied to the actual fingernail or acrylic nails.

If you decide to go ahead and try soft gel manicures and pedicures, there’s no need to worry that your color choices will be limited. There are some soft gel lines with 40 different shades to choose from to suit everyone’s taste. From deep reds to the popular black shades, you can find your own style represented in the soft gel applications.

Often, nail salons have a lot of harsh smelling, toxic chemicals floating around. Many women either cannot tolerate the smell or don’t wish to sit there for hours on end every 1-2 weeks. Thankfully, these soft gel applications last longer which requires less time sitting in the nail salon chair. Before your next visit to the salon, why not consider soft gel manicures or pedicures? They last longer, less damaging to your nails, and the color variety can’t be beat.

Thread and Sugar offers these soft gel services:

You may not think that communication is a critical factor when you’re ordering beauty services to be done. After all, when you go to get your nails done or have a new hairdo, you don’t have to worry about your communication strategies with your beauty technician. However, communication is critical in getting the services provided to you that you enjoy. Here are some things to remember when you go to have your next session done.

First, remember that it’s your responsibility as a client to inform the technician of any concerns that you have. You can’t expect your beauty service provider to read your mind. Tell them how you feel about their service – if you were unhappy with your last hair service or you want your nails to be shaped in a certain way, let them know. That way, they can make adjustments according to what will make you, as their client, happy.

Secondly, if you have any allergies or sensitivities to certain chemicals, make sure to let them know before you start your beauty session. For instance, many people are asthmatic and might be prone to suffering an attack by being around certain substances. Letting the provider know this in advance will save you discomfort and embarrassment in the event that you have an issue.

Next, if you have any certain expectations, always let your provider know. For instance, if you expect a particular service to take a certain amount of time, let them know if you have any time constraints at that particular moment. Just because your friend had something done that took one hour doesn’t necessarily mean that it will take you the same amount of time. This is just one expectation that can easily be taken care of by having a conversation.

It’s important to remember to treat your service provider with respect. Sometimes we might be having a bad day and want to take it out on the person who is trying to help us. Make sure that you are courteous at all times, and you will likely receive the same in return.

Many people wonder about tipping when it comes to beauty services. A good rule of thumb is usually 20% for the person who performed the service. If something took a lot longer or had a wonderful result, you might want to throw a little extra on top. Sometimes, the person may have had an assistant helping them so you may want to consider giving them a tip as well. If you are having a higher end service done, the tip will likely be expected to be higher as well. Make sure to tip in cash as that will be greatly appreciated by your technician.

We at Thread and Sugar always remind our clients to call in beforehand for appointments and bookings to discuss any issues, expectations and any concerns regarding the services that will be provided. This is done to ensure that only the highest quality of service will be provided for all the clients who are coming in the salon. A Happy Client is Equivalent to a Happy Salon:)

When it comes to purchasing personal care products, many people are now leaning towards buying products that have the word “natural” or “organic.” However, how do you really know whether or not the product you’re thinking of buying is actually made of organic ingredients? While the United States government has a division that polices organic foods, there is no such entity that is bound to protect the public when it comes to beauty and personal care products that are labeled organic. This leaves the consumer to do some investigation and education on their own.

The truth is that there is little approval required before a company is able to take a beauty product to market when it is labeled organic. No government entity checks the product over to make sure that the claims being made are true. Much of this is done in an after market scenario. In other words, once a product is brought to market and consumers start to complain about it, then it may be pulled from the shelves. Before that time, nothing is really done to make sure that the product is, in fact, organic. In other words, the policing of these products is done after the fact. Of course, the consumer has already spent money and put the products on, or in, their bodies by this point.

As recently as 2011, major retailer Whole Foods decided to prohibit any organic personal care products from being on their store shelves without having a third party verification that the product is actually natural or organic. This is done by a division of the government or an independent third party company called NSF.

So what can the consumer do to make sure that they are protecting themselves when it comes to organic products? The first thing that a consumer needs to do is start reading the ingredients. The more ingredients a product has, the greater chance that they are mostly chemicals. For that reason, it’s important to see how many of the ingredients you recognize. If they sound mainly natural, you may have a winner. However, if you feel like you’re trying to learn a new language, the product is likely not organic.
Sometimes, you’ll see a USDA organic seal on a product which will let you know that it is at least 95% certified organic. Some manufacturers will put the word “organic” in products when it only has two or three ingredients that fit the bill. The Natural Products Association has also started a new certification system for beauty products specifically. Although it doesn’t give you information on whether all of the ingredients are organic, they will tell you if certain products are plant or mineral-based. Aside from that, do your research online to see what other customers have found out about particular products.

Having to own an organic salon only means being responsible in providing honest and truthful service to our clients. We stand by our eco-friendly advocacy, that all the products we use in our salon are organic, natural, and without any harmful ingredients.
